There have been criticisms of the Export Market Development Grants (EMDGs) scheme in Australia. The Australian Government set up the scheme to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to export by reimbursing their promotional costs. The Australian Labor Party plans to increase funding for the EMDG scheme if it wins the 2007 federal election. Critics of the scheme complain that its eligibility criteria is too restrictive and many of the funds locked up in the scheme are not spent. The Australian Industry Group has called for the annual funding of the scheme to be doubled to $A300 million.
